District leaders push community partnerships for Title 1 schools in Leon County

LEON COUNTY, Fla.(WTXL) — The push is on to make sure Title 1 schools in Leon County, have everything they need to thrive this year. 23 schools in Leon County are classified as Title 1. With the start of the new year, district leaders are asking stakeholders to invest in the success of these low-income schools.

“We need to enlist the entire community that means the religious community the business community,”said Darryl Jones, Leon County Schoolboard District 3.

What they’re asking, is for community partnerships to give faculty and students the resources to thrive. FAMU’s and FSU’s Colleges of Education have already answered the call to support the effort. “The key priority for this year is to truly look into the K to 20 schools and see what their needs are and how we can help with those needs,” said Allyson Watson, Dean of the College of Education.

Florida State says this partnership is great for the future educators they are training. “They’re working with Godby High school and Nims middle school and then we have our elementary who just recently partnered with Woodville Elementary and Pineview elementary so this is a family affair,” said Rose Skepple, FSU College of Education.

The school board agrees the partnership is a win-win.

Freddie Figgers who donated five thousand dollars to create a science enrichment center at the Oakridge elementary school. What we were able to see from one year to the next the sustainable gains of the scores of those students who participated in that science center,” said Jones

People are already answering the call with Religious leaders adopting schools near their places of worship. Darryl Jones also says something simple like volunteering to read or mentoring students has a big impact.
